What is WML?

WML stands for Wireless Markup Language. It is a markup language defined using XML, and is used to produce web pages for mobile phones and other portables. Although WML can be compared to HTML, it is a mistake to think of WML as providing simply 'the Internet on a phone'. Given the limitations of mobile phones with regard to screen size and data entry, the web pages and applications developed with WML need to be tailored to mobile phone used.

In the same way that HTML page functions can be extended using JavaScript, WML page functions can be extended using WMLScript. Our WAP site, which uses WMLScript, can be accessed by a WAP phone at : http://www.wapdrive.com/yellowfog/ss.wml. If you don't have a WAP phone, clicking on this link brings up a simulation of the site in a new browser window. Unfortunately the simulator tool does not support WMLScript, so parts of the site will not appear as designed.

If you're interested in learning how to program WML, then have a look at our comprehensive WML tutorial, which contains 16 lessons.
